A thyroid panel evaluates thyroid function and helps diagnose thyroid disorders. The tests included in a thyroid panel measure the amount of thyroid hormones in the blood.

Thyroid hormones are chemicals that travel through the blood and control the body's metabolism, or how the body functions and uses energy.

Why is a thyroid panel important?

Your thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, growth and other bodily functions. A thyroid panel can determine how well the thyroid is working.

It can help diagnose if you have an underactive or overactive thyroid gland. There are two different kinds of thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Menstrual period irregularity in women

Signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include:

  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Excessive hunger
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dryness, bulging or puffiness of the eyes

What should you expect with a thyroid panel?

A healthcare provider will draw blood, which will go to a lab for testing. Certain medications can interfere with the tests included in the thyroid panel, so tell your healthcare provider about any drugs or supplements you’re taking.

A thyroid panel can make sure your thyroid is controlling your metabolism properly. If you haven’t had your thyroid checked lately and you’re experiencing symptoms of a thyroid disorder, contact the nearest CareNow® urgent care clinic to set up an exam.
